Assembling The HOPE System (Cont.)

e.) If you have a "continuous feed" printer (i. e. the paper is "fan-fold" with pin feed holes along each side edge), check that the paper is inserted properly and flows easily. Many printers have switches for changing settings for "platen or roller feed vs. pin feed. Be sure the slide switch is set to pin feed (sometimes called tractor feed")

f.) Check that the printer operates properly by turning on the computer and printing a brief letter (Select Letter Writing from the To Do Menu).

g.) If you have a "sheet fed" printer, load it with standard "xerox-type" copy paper.

Run a test similar to the one above to see that it works properly.

h.) Check out the modem. Your modem is usually inside the computer, although it may be a separate box. It can be recognized by the ports on it which will accept standard telephone plug wires. At the DOS Prompt, type MODE <Enter>. Then type AT0 (Zero). The Modem should respond "OK."

i.) Get the telephone cord which came with the modem. Plug one end into one of the telephone ports on the back of the modem marked "line." Plug the other end into the wall jack. Now you may plug the cord from your telephone into the other telephone port on the back of the modem (at the back of the computer).

j.) Make sure all the electrical plugs are plugged into your multi-plug outlet, make sure the multi-plug outlet is on, and you are ready to go.
