Assembling The HOPE System

Assembling HOPE is easy once you know where everything goes. The following are step by step instructions on how to assemble (or reassemble) your system. Refer to figure 8 for the difference between male and female connectors and ports. You may also refer to figures 9 and 10 which picture the back and side of the computer.

Follow these steps and you will soon be up and running.

a.) Take out the computer and lay it in front of you. Find a power cable (usually black) which has an electrical outlet plug coming out of one end and a three-pronged outlet with a "house shaped" female connector coming out of the other side. Plug one end into the computer and the other into the "power strip" surge protector.

b.) Take out the monitor. There should be a gray or black power cable with a large three pronged female connector on one end and a male connector on the other end which will plug into the wall outlet or into another connector on the back of the computer near the computers power supply. The male connector from the monitor should be plugged into the appropriate outlet.

c.) Take the signal connector of the black or gray cable with the male 15 pin small trapezoidal plug and carefully plug it into the port on the back of the computer which matches it . The port may say "Monitor" or "VGA" under it.

d.) To attach your printer:

Take out the printer and the gray printer cable. There should be a gray cable with a wide trapezoidal male connector (with a "bar" inside the trapezoid) on one end and a narrower male connector (with "spikes") on the other end. Attach this cable into the appropriate ports on the back of the computer (may be marked "printer") and the printer itself.

There may be snap wire hold downs on either end of the printer cable. On the computer, there may be hold down screws. If so, tighten the screws around the cable or snap the wires into place.
